1st Day
Journey and flight to Rwanda. Arrival at Kigali Int. Airport, evening or late at night, depending on the airline. I will meet you at the airport and from there we proceed to Hotel Nobleza, in Kicukiro on the hill, with view on the city of Kigali for dinner and overnight rest.

2nd Day
Your day starts with a first breakfast in Rwanda followed by a short briefing on the tour. After that we drive through town and then to the east, towards Rwamagana (lunch)  and further on to Kayonza and Kibungo to the Akagera National Park on the south eastern border of the country. (one way is around 140 km, of which 40 are dirt road). Arrival late afternoon at the Park and the Akagera Game Lodge where the view across the savannah and over the lakes across to Tansania is just magnificient. Dinner and night at the Akagera Game Lodge high up on the hills.

3rd Day
During the day, game drive through the Park on the tracks of  zebras, buffalos, hippos, giraffs, elephants, lions, rhinos and various antilopes and many more! A night drive can be arranged on demand. We will also do a  boat trip (early morning or late afternoon) on lake Ihema to catch sight of hippos and  to discover the islands out there,  where the mysterious crocodiles live and 100ds of birds have their nest. The lake is one of the most bird populated lake on the whole continent.

4th Day
From south to north of the Park. After breakfast back down to the lakeshore and through Acacia thickets, along the lakes and the hippo pool (picnic), to reach more open savannah land on the Mohana and Kilala plains where quite a lot of animals graze in idyllic grassland. We exit the park in late afternoon and head back west to Kigali, via lake Muhazi. Dinner and night at the hotel Nobleza in Kicukiro, overlooking Kigali town.

5th Day
After breakfast we drive through town and high hills to the north west, towards Ruhengeri/Musanze and the Volcanoes. From there we proceed westwards crossing the Nile/Congo watershed at around 2300m, to Gisenyi/Rubavu on the shores of lake Kivu. Lake Kivu (at 1560 m altitude) on the foot of the Virunga mountains, with mount Karisimbi the culminant peak at over 4500 m,  is 2650 km2 big  and offers one of  the most beautiful african landscapes with breathtaking panorama views and scenery. For those who like to swim, the waters of lake Kivu are prefectly clean (no billharzia and you won't meet any crocos or hippos either!!)  and have an ideal temperatur all year round and there is nothing more relaxing after a busy day than to have a swim. Dinner and night rest at the charming Maison St Benoit, a short distance out of town, directly by the lake.

6th Day
Breakfast in the idyllic gardens with "your feet in the water" and a view over the lake to the mountains of the Congo on the western lake side. After lunch, we proceed to Gisenyi/Rubavu and further on across the border Rwanda/DRC to Goma. Later in afternoon a ride to town/market can be done for those who are interested. Dinner on the nice terrace and night at the comfortable Caritas Guest House on the lakeside.

7th Day
Today you'll have to wake up at dawn for breakfast followed by a 2 hours drive to the north, on a quiet good  road, to the Parc National des Virunga (former Parc Albert), created already in 1925 as the first african national parc.We register at the park office in Bukima and before starting the tour, the guides give you a briefing on your visit and dispatch the groups. After a climb with an escort of park rangers through thick bamboo and rain forest higher up, you will discover these gentle giants and be able to spend one hour with them, like on a family visit! The encounter with a mountain gorilla family in the Virunga mountains is without any doubt one of the highlights of your journey and one of the most memorable experiences with wild animals one can make. For those who choose not to visit the mountain gorillas, a trek to the Chimpanzees, who live close to these often mist covered mountains, can be arranged; but it needs to be checked first if they are wihtin range or not. Later in the afternoon, after returning from the mountain, we head back to Goma. Dinner and overnight at the Caritas Guest House directly by the lake.

8th Day
After breakfast we head north again, but only a short distance from town to the foot of the active vulcano Nyiragongo. The Kibati patrol post is located at about 2000 m seelevel and this is also the starting point of the volcano trek. The climb to the 3470 m high crater rim begins through easy terrain but thick tropical vegetation, together with parkrangers. Now and then a short rest allows you to admire the views over to the  volcano chain and down to the lake and the city. Depending on the individual fitness of the group members, you reach the top of the mountain earlier or a bit later in the afternoon. The look down into the boiling lava lake is really impressive and gets even more spectacular after dark. Just below the crater rim, a few huts have been build to accomodate visitors for the night. Please think of taking with you all the necessary gear, as wind/rain jacket, warm clothes and a good sleeping bag, as temperatures can drop close to 0°.

9th Day
